With an increasing national debt, soaring cost of living, unemployment and looming inflation can the House of Commons justify spending £30,000 on redesigning a document which lists the day's business.
The order paper is published every day, and lists all the questions, debates and notices the House will deal with. MPs were told last week that the redesign would incur 'no additional costs'.
With a stubborn national debt, soaring cost of living, unemployment and looming inflation wouldn't you like to know where in the order of priority the redesign of the daily agenda was listed?
Remember the rhetoric 'We are ALL in it together' We must ALL face austerity' We must ALL demand a fairer society where ALL pay their fair dues.
The BIG society seems to have come at a heavy price to this green and pleasant land, with its constituents bearing the cost of MPs expenses, Bankers bonuses, Cabinet misdemeanour's and the like.
Apparently, back in 1861, Count Johann Bernhard of Rechberg and Rothenlöwen dismissed a document concerning the recognition of Italy as a nation state, writing words to the effect that the guarantees 'are not worth the paper they are written on'.
His words implied that the value of the paper far outweighed the value of the guarantees written therein.
And yet in light of the crisis this nation faces daily, with deep cuts in public services and the growing number of citizens using food banks everyday. The House of Commons have sufficiently prioritised the budget of £30,000 to redesign a document which lists the day's business.
If MPs were to take the following words of the King to heart maybe their priorities would change, and the task of redesigning the day's business document become less important.

I wonder how long it will take for Joe public to realise that whether its £5 or £30,000 when it comes to political rhetoric measured against the value of citizenship, what's listed on the document 'REALLY IS' not worth the paper it's written on!
