A reflection on oppression and its occurrence within civil societies.

If you see the oppression of the poor and the denial of justice and righteousness in the province, do not be shocked at the sight [of corruption]; for a higher official watches over another official, and there are higher ones over them [looking out for one another].

Then I looked again and considered all the acts of oppression that were being practiced under the sun. And behold I saw the tears of the oppressed and they had no one to comfort them; and on the side of their oppressors was power, but they had no one to comfort them.

These passages tell a terrible tale of oppression, injustice and corruption that is common in society and all too familiar to many. These scriptures can be transported in any period, and it will remain relevant. The harsh reality it presents is that oppression remains a consistent occurrence for many people. Comfort and help are out of reach from the oppressed because the authorities that are over them are complicit. This happens because authorities turn a blind eye, and their policies sanction oppression, whether it is deliberate or inadvertently. The opportunity for recourse is out of reach for the oppressed due to insufficient funds; rarely seeing those that abuse their power appropriately punished and tried by law. Trials cannot promise to be absent of bribery and corruption. Therefore, the system of law and order fails due to the systemic problems mentioned above.
2020 will be remembered as a year of “enough”. Survivors of oppression rise and stand up to their oppressors and remind them that there is power in unification. They can no longer get away with their abuse of power; their covert underhanded tactics that keep the power imbalance in their favour.

This list is not exhaustive of the many types of oppression that is present in this world.
On the 5th of July 2016, I wrote the article God is not partial. An article which is still as relevant then as it is now. It described the vision that God had for humanity; men and women from different nations, races and ethnicity fellowshipping and advancing the Kingdom together.
The battle is not carnal but spiritual, however through God’s wisdom we understand that a critical way to defeat oppression is the unification of a people lobbying the change of laws and practices and holding authorities that are over the people to account.
We have a Lord who is not asleep and is acquainted with the plight of His people. Let us call on His name to give us the justice that is required.
The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
